Community or Parking?

I came across an interesting article. It seems that the administration at UNLV is considering not adding any additional parking at UNLV, in hopes of going away from the commuter school image it currently has. As a commuter student myself, i found this frustrating, but then again not having experienced the traditonal college experience (living on dorms, greek life etc..) i found this to be a good idea.

I think UNLV should definitely make improvements to give students a more traditional college experience. They should lower the costs of dorms and make a greater community presence. They have taken steps with the Midtown project but you also have to consider that some students don’t have the desire for a traditional college experience. This is also a good move with the rise of the three tier college system that is forming in Las Vegas. However, one must remember that Nevada is for the most part a transient state where people come and go, and you hardly see a community culture like other major cities. Perhaps in the future (the not so near future) , UNLV will turn into a traditional college where the majority of students live on campus. We’ll see how this turns out.

Ice? In the Desert?

Sand, sand, sand and yet again, more sand. Its winter and all us locals get to see is sand, and some specs of snow far off in the distance. Ready for some good ol’ winter time fun? Lake Las Vegas has the luxary of gracing our wondeful webpage for a second time with its annual Floating Ice Rink. Now, I know, you are asking….ice? In the desert? But how can it be? Come on now people this is Vegas, anything is possible. Just go with it!

The annual Lake Las Vegas Ice rink opened November 16th at 8:00pm and will run through February 17th 9:00pm. Cost is $15 per person, $12 for children (12 and under) Groups of 20 or more $8, season pass $125 (including skate rental) Times of operation are as follows: November 16th – December 21st Sat / Sun 12:00pm – 9:00pm, weekdays 3pm – 9pm December 22nd – January 7th 12pm – 9pm January 7th – February 17th Sat / Sun 12:00pm – 9:00pm, weekdays 3pm – 9pm

Town Square

Town Square is a new outdoor shopping center that recently opened near the south end of the Strip, past Mandalay Bay. It is a 1.5 million-square-foot facility, designed as an old metropolis city with stone walkways and antique street poles. The square not only offers 150 retail shops and more than a dozen restaurants, but an 18-screen movie theater, a gigantic children’s park, a Whole Foods Market and a 24 Hour Fitness gym as well.

For the holiday season, Town Square has decorated the shopping center with bright lights, beautiful garland, and an enormous Christmas tree. Lose yourself in the nostalgia of the holidays as Town Square recreates the world of Norman Rockwell. The holidays of yesteryear come alive at Town Square with holiday decor, including a magnificent 40-foot illumintaed tree and life-sized replicas of some of Norman Rockwell’s most famous Saturday Evenign Post Covers.

If you are a fan you are probably one of his already millions of fans online however given the opportunity to see him live is so much better. Saturday December 1st Dane Cook performed in his Rough Around the Edges tour at Mandalay Bay Events Center. The show was amazing but a few suggestions if attending an event at the Mandalay Bay Event Center. Leave about 6 hours early and dont bother parking anywhere near the center. It was absolue mayhem to the point where we actually ended up missing all of the opening act and about the first 10 mintues of Dane Cooks show. The traffic control “cops” had us going on a wild goose chase for a parking spot, everything was either full, closed, or illegal. What next? Lets valet at the Luxor…”Ma’am we are not permitted to park cars here for the event center.” Now it may have been the fact that he was just a nice valet or the fact that my eyes welled up since at that point I would have missed the whole show but he parked the car. I have never had a “good” experience with Mandalay Bay parking for the event center so if there is any advise I can give, go EARLY or park really far away and catch a cab to the center. Maybe just walk, would have been faster if I had.

Thats right people, I recently attended the Billy Joel concert. Despite popular belief he is moving and shaking with the best of them, even throwing out some Elvis moves. Although Mr. Joel is not exactly in this generation of music he is a legend and I would recommend this show to ANYBODY looking to hear some good music! Blue October and the Pearl

I have to admit, my new favorite concert venue is the Pearl at the Palms (when Mandalay Bay Beach is closed of course). I have seen several performances there to date including some stand up shows as well but this last trip is what solidified my love for the Pearl. The Pearl is smaller by a massive amount to the typical Vegas concert venues such as MGM Grand Garden Arena or Mandaly Bay Event Center. It never seems to be over crowded and all in all it has always been a pleasent experience. I have sat everywhere from the very back row (and I still had a great time) to right up front on the floor. The Palms did it right with this venue, its amazing.

Blue October, accompanied by YellowCard, Shiney Toy Guns, and Lovedrug recently took the stage at the Pearl for an unforgettable concert. Save the drunk lady who kept falling on me it was an amazing show.

Better late than never I always say…

On October 20, 2007 Las Vegas celebrated the 11th annual Bite of Las Vegas hosted by Mix 94.1. The event featured booths from the valleys best restaraunts and live performances.

There was the featured HOB main stage as well as a stage for local bands to perform on. The event was absolutely spectacular except right before Lifehouse was due to take the stage. Good ol’ mother nature took a furious turn for the worst and whipped winds through Desert Breeze Park that I have not witnessed in my 9 years of living here.

Keep an eye out for next years event, its definately not one to miss.

Fremont East District

The city of Las Vegas completed a $5.5 million streetscape effort for downtown’s new entertainment district, Fremont East, which is adjacent to the Fremont Street Experience in the heart of downtown. Improvements made included the creation of wider sidewalks and more pedestrian-friendly streets; landscaping; lighted gateways and four 40-foot-tall, retro-looking neon signs.

Through this streetscape effort, the city is capitalizing on popular nostalgia by reviving the old glamour of vintage Las Vegas. As part of its downtown revitalization efforts, the city’s Redevelopment Agency contributed funds to this renovation in an effort to attract additional non-gaming nightclubs, cocktail lounges and entertainment hotspots to the area.

More than a dozen new nightclub and dining venues have been recruited in and near the Fremont East District. Venues recently attracted include:

Las Vegas at the bottom of another list

Travel and Leisure and CNN did a poll last month to rank major travel destinations, with Las Vegas being one of them. Unfortunately, Las Vegas ranked low on many cultural polls. This is something that should be expected from a city that doesn’t really have any heart or soul. But then again, Las Vegas is still fairly new and still growing. I think Vegas will eventually grow to be it’s own identity and have more culture, but that might come in a few generations from now. For now, Las Vegas will continue to be a weekend sin city escape for many Americans, while those that live here will continue to try to get some of the tourist dollars while a few of those will try to enjoy the few cultural aspects that do exist here in Las Vegas.

The Da Vinci Experience

Montelago Village at Lake Las Vegas

This beautiful resort is the perfect location for locals to escape into a whole other world. It is located just 17 miles east of the Las Vegas Strip. Once you enter Montelago Village, you feel as though you’ve been transported through time to an old Italian village.

You stroll along the stoned walkways to encounter restaurants, boutiques, bars, and shops that wind alongside an eventful lake. There is a stage floating on top of the water, with boats passing by all day and night. Gondolas are available for a romantic voyage of the lake and its surrounding areas.

Las Vegas is usually known as a location where you can’t have much fun unless you’re 21. For the most part this is true, however a new location has open for those under 21 to enjoy themselves and hang out. Azuza Hookah & Tea is a new Lounge across the street from the CSN Charleston Campus. They offer some very nice hookah that is smooth and not harsh like many other places. I visited this spot with a couple of friends, and must say that i was really impressed. Check them out whenever you get a chance. 10% discount for CSN / UNLV students.

Hot Import Nights came to Las Vegas this past saturday. HIN is a traveling car show with a lot of cars, girls and music. Pretty popular event for car enthusiasts and the general public. Hope everyone is having a mighty fine week. There are a ton of events going on at UNLV this week. If you’re a student you should check some of them out and support your school ( or at least pretend you do , so your parents wont be mad).

Native American Potluck

Potluck for native and non-native American students. I can never miss the opportunity to try out new food, you shouldn’t either. November 9th Student Union room 208 at 6:00PM.

Guess Who’s Gay?

This should be pretty interesting. Try to determine a person’s sexuality solely on their looks at the Student Union Theater on October 10th at 6:00PM. This is an event to for LGBT Awareness Month.
Rebels After Dark

Money Seminar
